St Mary’s (Primary School Direct)

Why Train with us?

St Mary’s became a teaching school in May 2013. This builds on our success as a National Support School and our Head Teacher’s role as a National Leader. For the last ten years, St Mary’s has consistently supported schools in challenging circumstances, both within Birmingham and nationally. As an outstanding school we are able to provide expertise in the form of excellent quality coaching, best practice in teaching and learning, advice and guidance. The Executive Head Teacher was awarded a CBE for her services to education in 2000.
St Mary’s is already a partner in providing Initial Teacher Training and has a staff who are skilled in mentoring, coaching and assessing ITT students. The Executive Head Teacher has been instrumental in writing the DFE Teachers Standards and is also a trained OFSTED inspector.

Our trainees will have the opportunity to train in outstanding or good schools. They will spend the majority of their time in the main school, learning from outstanding teachers and being supported by experienced school based mentors. They will be given specialist support in many areas, including behaviour management, special educational needs, synthetic phonics, E.A.L., P.E., music and creative arts. Our expectations of trainees are very high and in return they must demonstrate that they can quickly put their learning into practice. We expect trainees to continually demonstrate their positive impact in the classroom, on the ethos of the school and on ensuring that all pupils have a high quality teaching experience.

Our school was given grade 1 outstanding for OFSTED, Overall Effectiveness and Teaching and Learning. We therefore have the capacity to use our outstanding practitioners to deliver a high quality, school centred training programme.

We work in strong collaboration with our accrediting provider, the Titan Partnership and are accredited by Birmingham City University. This places us in an ideal position to respond to changes in initial teacher training. We aim to recruit exceptional candidates who will train with us to become future outstanding teachers and leaders. We aim to develop and retain the best teachers for positions within the alliance, once their training is complete. The training is for you as a teacher, but also as a professional in itself. It provides a baseline for further development and career planning.
