Secondary Graduate Teacher Programme

The Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) is suitable for well qualified people who have relevant school experience. On this route, a school employs you as an unqualified teacher and trains you through an individual training programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Unlike School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT), GTP trainees are employed by the school. Sucessful GTP students receive QTS only.  (Titan also gives the option for some GTP trainees to receive a PGCE and accreditation at Masters Level).

GTP trainees are expected to find their own school placements.  Schools will quite often offer GTP places to staff who have worked within the school as classroom assistants or technicians, for example. 

The GTP normally lasts for one academic year, but if you already have considerable teaching experience it may be possible to reduce this time.

The GTP has the same entry requirements as other postgraduate initial teacher training (ITT) courses.

Entry to the GTP is very competitive with places going to the best applications in each of the TDA priority categories. These are:

  • secondary priority subjects – mathematics, information and communications technology (ICT), design & technology (D&T) and ; high quality secondary applications in English and PE

During the course the trainees will be assessed on the following:

  • Assignments (2) (Additional assignments are studied for those wishing to gain a PGCE)
    Teaching
  • Skills tests (Literacy, Numeracy, ICT)
  • Reflective, Evaluative Evidence Portfolio


The support/central training takes place as follows:

  • Broader Educational Issues (BEI) Sessions – Friday 9am-12noon
  • Subject application and assessment (SAA) Sessions – Wednesday 4.15pm-6pm

Trainees will identify which sessions they need to attend in an ITP at the start of the course. All trainee teachers need to have had two school experiences to meet the QTS Standards. Trainees with limited experience may be required to undertake a second school experience. This should equate to 25 school days.
