School Direct Overview
School Direct puts schools at the heart of the process. With School Direct, schools can request training places directly, select the accredited provider with whom they want to work and agree the content and focus of the training programme. Trainees are placed in a base training school for the majority of the training year and also carry out a short second school placement.
The School Direct (salaried) programme is open to graduates with three or more years’ career experience. Trainees are employees of their school for the year and are usually paid at point 1 of the unqualified teacher pay scale (currently £15,976). There are no fees on this route and trainees are not eligible for bursaries or scholarships.
The amount you earn will be dependent on the school you train in and the subject you’re teaching. This year, a number of schools are offering an enhanced salary of up to £25,000 to trainees in maths and physics – you should check with the school before you apply to see if they are offering this higher rate.
The School Direct Training programme is available to all other graduates and offers tax-free bursaries of up to £30,000 for candidates with top degrees in priority subjects. Candidates pay a tuition fee.
